Tesofensine is a serotonin–noradrenaline–dopamine reuptake inhibitor from the phenyltropane family of drugs, which is being developed for the treatment of obesity. Tesofensine was originally developed by a Danish biotechnology company, NeuroSearch, who transferred the rights to Saniona in 2014

Tesofensine is a novel weight loss medication that acts on neurotransmitters in the brain to suppress appetite and increase metabolism. It enhances the levels of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, crucial neurotransmitters responsible for regulating hunger, satiety, and mood. By influencing these neurotransmitters, tesofensine helps individuals achieve a caloric deficit, resulting in weight loss.

Initially it was developed as a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, tesofensine took an unforeseen path when researchers noticed its profound impact on weight loss during the clinical trial. The study aimed to assess the medication’s effects on cognitive function but was discontinued due to the remarkable weight loss outcomes that surpassed expectations.

Despite the study’s redirection, the weight loss effects of tesofensine could not be ignored. Clinical trials revealed that participants administered tesofensine experienced significant reductions in body weight, body fat percentage, and waist circumference over the trial period.
